Popular Nigerian pastor and musical artiste, Dolapo Lawal, has apologised after facing criticism for comments he made about Arsenal and its supporters.
Weeks before Arsenal’s Premier League title win, a viral clip showed the cleric, an avid Manchester United fan, dismissing the club’s title chances during a church service. He said even if Arsenal had a 29-point lead, they could not win the league because it was “cursed.”
“Arsenal cannot win it. I said it three months ago that even if the gap is 29 points, Arsenal cannot win it. There is a way you will watch a club, you do not need a prophecy to know that it is cursed,” he said.
He also advised women against dating Arsenal supporters, adding, “And as a lady, if an Arsenal fan asks you out, it is a bad sign. Do not follow him.”
The remarks drew widespread criticism from football fans and Christians on platforms like Facebook, Instagram and X. Some accused him of using the pulpit for mockery and divisive banter.
X user @SPIRITOFTRUTH16 wrote that Arsenal fans should demand an apology on the same altar where the comments were made. Another user, @seunbo, said supporters would respond with banter before considering any apology. Several commenters argued that preachers should focus on spiritual matters rather than football commentary.
After Arsenal secured the title on 19 May 2026, Lawal posted an apology video on Instagram. He clarified that his earlier remarks were meant as banter.
“Congratulations Arsenal. For anyone that was provoked by my prior banter, accept my apology. Ladies, please date Arsenal guys. Date the winners. Arsenal fans, there is a special thanksgiving service on Sunday for you. Come and let us celebrate together,” he said.
