Army Shake-Up: COAS Shaibu Redeploys Top Generals in Frontlines in Major War on Terror Restructure

ABUJA — The Nigerian Army has just dropped its biggest shake-up of 2026.

In a sweeping midnight-style redeployment, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has moved his most trusted generals to the frontlines, the war rooms, and the institutions that shape Nigeria’s future fights.

The message is clear: The war is changing. So is the Army.

The announcement came Wednesday in a statement signed by Col. Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations.

—BORNO GETS A NEW WARLORD—

The biggest move lands in the North-East.

Maj.-Gen. Ibikunle Ajose has been pulled from the comfort of Army Headquarters, Department of Army Operations, and thrown straight into the heat of battle. He is now the new Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force North-East, Operation HADIN KAI.

He takes over from Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, who is not retiring, but being redeployed to think. Abubakar will now serve as Dean, Faculty of Operational Research* at the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre. From bullets to books — tasked with studying the wars of yesterday to win the wars of tomorrow.

It’s a straight swap of fire and foresight.

—THE THINK-TANKS AND MONEY MEN MOVED—

Shaibu isn’t just fighting insurgents. He’s restructuring the Army’s brain and wallet.

Maj.-Gen. Aminu Umar leaves Civil-Military Affairs at Army HQ to take command as Commandant, Army War College Nigeria — the institution where Nigeria’s future generals are forged.

Maj.-Gen. GS Muhammed exits the Office of the National Security Adviser and will now control the Army’s purse as Director-General, Nigerian Army Finance Corporation.

In another power rotation, Maj.-Gen. Julius Osifo moves from that same Finance Corporation to become Chairman, Military Pension Board.

And Maj.-Gen. IE Ekpenyong heads to Defence Headquarters as Director, Engineering Services, Department of Defence Logistics.

Money, brains, logistics. All reshuffled.

—BRIGADES GET NEW COMMANDERS—

At the ground level, new brigade commanders have been named to tighten the grip on troubled zones.

Brig.-Gen. MS Adamu moves from Nigerian Army Women Command to lead the newly established 8 Brigade.

Brig.-Gen. MS Sule leaves Special Task Force Operation ENDURING PEACE for 27 Task Force Brigade.

Brig.-Gen. I. Sule is redeployed from Recruitment Management to command 6 Division Garrison.

Brig.-Gen. E Azenda moves from Land Forces Simulation Centre to 2 Division Garrison.

—“JUSTIFY THE CONFIDENCE REPOSED IN YOU”—

According to Col. Anele, the shake-up is deliberate. It is about “placing the right leadership, experience and expertise in critical operational theatres and strategic appointments” to match Nigeria’s evolving security threats.

COAS Shaibu didn’t mince words in his charge to the new appointees.

He ordered them to justify the trust placed in them through “exemplary leadership, operational innovation and professionalism.”

He told them to remain committed to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty, protecting its territorial integrity, and supporting civil authority to keep the peace.

“The Army remains committed to a dynamic leadership and force-employment framework,” Shaibu said.

“We will improve operational outcomes, strengthen joint and inter-agency coordination, and enhance our capacity to respond decisively to contemporary and emerging threats.”

Translation: Expect new tactics. Expect tougher action. Expect results.

With insurgency morphing, banditry spreading, and new threats emerging, the Nigerian Army has just reloaded its command structure.

The generals have new offices. The soldiers have new orders.
The battle for Nigeria’s security has entered a new phase.
