In a bid to beat Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC’s) deadline to political parties to submit names of their candidates for the 2023 General Elections, the Labour Party (LP) on Friday named veteran politician, Dr. Doyin Okupe, as its Vice presidential candidate.
Okupe was quick to explain the circumstances that threw him up as the interim Vice-presidential candidate to the party’s standard bearer Peter Obi.

He said he was holding the position in trust for the rightful owner.
He said that the party took this route to beat the Friday, June 17, 2022 deadline set by INEC for the submission of names of candidates.
He added that LP was open to formation of a behemoth of political force to fight All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming presidential election.
There were indications on Friday that the party was consulting with a former INEC Chairman, Professor Attahiru Jega, to consider accepting to be Obi’s running mate in the 2023 presidential poll.
The academics and egg heads in the Labour Party who are friends of Jega were said to be deepening conversation and consultations with him.
