● Ex-President disowns fake Instagram handle as Kalu says WhatsApp has been cloned
Fraudsters using social media to defraud unsuspecting members of the Nigerian public have taken their activities a notch higher.
They have created fraudulent social media handles for high-profile individuals in the country.
In a statement yesterday, former President Goodluck Jonathan said he was being impersonated by fraudsters, and that a fraudulent Instagram handle had been impersonating him.
The former President, in a statement signed by his Media Aide, Ikechukwu Eze, insisted that he did not operate any Instagram account.
The statement was entitled “Beware of fake Instagram account impersonating H.E. Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.”
Read it: “Our attention has been drawn to a fraudulent Instagram account operating under the handle goodluck_ebelejonathan, which is falsely impersonating former President Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
“This impostor account has been deceitfully posting content, some copied from Dr. Jonathan’s Facebook page, while pretending to represent the former President.
“We wish to emphasise that Dr. Jonathan does not operate any Instagram account.
“The media and members of the public are strongly advised to disregard, avoid sharing, or promoting any content originating from this fake profile.”
Also, yesterday [Thursday, August 14, 2025], the Senator representing Abia North Senatorial District, Orji Uzor Kalu, sounded the alarm over alleged moves by suspected fraudsters to impersonate him.
A statement issued on Thursday by his media office said the lawmaker was being impersonated via WhatsApp.
While calling on the public to disregard every communication from the two mobile numbers used for the fraudulent activities, the lawmaker said he had a single line, which has not been changed.
The statement reads, “Kindly disregard the two numbers claiming to be Senator Orji Uzor Kalu.
“Since the inception of network services, Senator Kalu has consistently been in communication with a single network line and these numbers below are none of them.
“The general public should please beware of desperate fraudsters.”
