The controversy surrounding the outcome of last Saturday’s Local Government election has continued to linger, with conflicting results being announced by different officials.

This electoral turmoil has cast a shadow over the legitimacy of the election, leaving both the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) battling for control of the Etsako West Local Government chairmanship seat.

The situation took a puzzling turn when AbdulGaniyu Braimah, a lecturer at Auchi Polytechnic and the appointed returning officer for the Etsako West Local Government chairmanship election, declared the APC candidate, Abudulahi Abubakar, as the winner.

According to Braimah, Abubakar secured 8,653 votes, while the PDP candidate, Zibiri Muhizu Marvelous, trailed behind with 4,656 votes.

This declaration was made in Auchi, adding to the growing confusion and uncertainty surrounding the election results.

However, the controversy worsenee when another individual, Asibor Mark, also claimed to be a returning officer, but this time for the election in Benin City.

Mark declared an entirely different outcome, stating that the PDP candidate, Zibiri Muhizu Marvelous, emerged as the winner with a staggering 30,594 votes, while the APC candidate trailed with 7,896 votes.

This conflicting declaration further fueled suspicions of irregularities and raised questions about the accuracy of the results.

The conflicting reports from these purported returning officers have left both political parties and the public in a state of bewilderment and skepticism.

The integrity of the electoral process is now under intense scrutiny, as citizens demand transparency and a resolution of the discrepancies in the announced results.

In the midst of this turmoil, calls for an independent investigation into the election have grown louder, with the hope of uncovering the truth and restoring public faith in the electoral system.

Until a clear and credible resolution is reached, the controversy surrounding the Etsako West Local Government chairmanship seat remains a contentious issue that threatens to undermine the democratic process and the credibility of the institutions responsible for conducting elections.
