Lawyers representing Stephen Abuwatseye, the Abuja Bolt driver who was assaulted by House of Representatives member Alex Ikwechegh from Abia State, have withdrawn their legal representation.

The law firm, Deji Adeyanju and Partners, explained that they made the decision to safeguard their professional integrity and uphold the highest ethical standards in the legal profession.

The assault occurred when Abuwatseye was delivering a package to Ikwechegh’s residence in the Maitama area of Abuja.

Following the alleged assault on the Bolt driver, the lawmaker was brought before a Kuje Magistrate Court in Abuja, where he was granted bail.

However, on Thursday, Abuwatseye publicly apologized to Ikwechegh and called for unity among Nigerians.

In response, the law firm issued a statement, signed by Zainab Ortega, announcing their withdrawal from the case.

The statement read: “We wish to formally announce the withdrawal of our legal representation in the case involving the alleged assault of Mr. Stephen Abuwatseye.”

The law firm explained that Abuwatseye had come to their firm on October 28, 2024, visibly distressed, seeking legal action over the alleged assault.

“After verifying his claims, the firm took steps to defend his rights on a pro bono basis, leading to the arraignment of the accused.”

However, due to the recent developments, the lawyers have decided to end their representation for the Abuja Bolt driver in order to protect its professional standing.

“After careful consideration, we have made the decision to withdraw our legal representation in order to protect our professional integrity and maintain the highest ethical standard in the legal profession,” the statement said.

The law firm wished Abuwatseye well and reaffirmed their commitment to defending the rights of the oppressed and marginalized individuals in society.
