The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the killing of 17 police officers in a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, Gujba LGA, Yobe State.
Force Public Relations Officer DCP Anthony Placid said the officers were undergoing specialised operational training when gunmen launched a coordinated assault on the facility about 1:15 a.m. on May 8, 2026.
Several Nigerian Army personnel also died while repelling the attack, Placid said in a statement on Saturday.
Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu described the fallen officers as dedicated personnel who showed patriotism and commitment to national security through their participation in counter-terrorism and tactical training. He conveyed condolences to the families and said their sacrifice would not be forgotten.
Yobe State Commissioner of Police Usman Kanfani Jibrin visited the school on behalf of the IGP, meeting with Commandant Brig. Gen. A.C. Enuagu, army officers, and surviving police trainees. He urged the trainees to complete the program in honor of their colleagues.
The police said they are working with the Armed Forces and other security agencies to track down those responsible for the attack.
