The Integrity Youth Alliance has strongly opposed the allegations of corruption, tribalism, and nepotism against the CEO of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).
In a press release on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, in Abuja, the Publicity Secretary of the Integrity Youth Alliance, Danjuma Lamido, refuted the claims and provided evidence to support Kyari’s commitment to transparency and accountability.
Lamido clarified that Mele Kyari, upon assuming office, made a pledge to open NNPC’s financial books to the public, demonstrating a commitment to transparency and accountability in line with the global principles of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).
It was stated that Kyari had indeed published the audited accounts of NNPC from 2018 to 2021, showcasing his efforts to promote openness.
The press release also highlighted Kyari’s efforts to rebrand the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited with a strong focus on transparency and accountability, aligning it with the global principles of the EITI. Lamido praised Kyari for bringing a fresh breath of openness to the company and making efforts to be accountable to Nigerians, breaking away from traditional practices.
Regarding the allegations of tribalism and nepotism, Lamido emphasized that the management team of NNPC consists of individuals from various geo-political zones of Nigeria, demonstrating a diverse representation in the leadership.
It was asserted that since Kyari assumed office as the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, he has implemented the Transparency, Accountability, and Performance Excellence (TAPE) agenda.
This agenda has resulted in the eradication of sharp business practices, regulatory violations, illegal fund deductions, and other failures, leading to greater transparency and accountability in the management of Nigerian oil and gas revenues.
The statement hailed Kyari as a leader with unmatched vision and courage, whose remarkable achievements have transformed the Nigerian oil and gas industry for the better. His legacy was predicted to endure for generations, inspiring others to follow in his footsteps and continue building on his accomplishments.
