Washington N’ Isaiah Osifo: The “Devil” and the Price of a Man, By John Mayaki

Up until 2019, one oscillating fellow parading himself under the name of Isaiah Osifo believed that Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state was a base traitor, a tyrant, a man not to be touched with a long pole and a ruler Edo State should avoid. He was not quiet about his thoughts either. He was particular to rattle the ears of the uninformed, and was author enough to attempt penmanship against the whimsicalities of the governor. At this point, he appeared a sentinel of the truth, a man with dignity and a man who would not descend from the lofty heights of being a voice for the voiceless.

Then the lure of money came. Isaiah betrayed kith and kin, betrayed his own self, and now serves up a model of what a man should not be. Here is an account of his descent in one word – money. To put it in another way, Isaiah Osifo is a malleable man, who has no problems constituting himself as clay to any potter wealthy enough to mould him to the right shape.

Otherwise, how can he explain the fact that he is the candidate of the labour party but has refused strongly to campaign for himself and has chosen instead to campaign for the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, Mr Godwin Obaseki. For the avoidance of doubt, this same Mr Obaseki was Isaiah Osifo’s model of what a leader should not be especially due to the governor’s tyranny and bad sense of judgement.

Hear Isaiah Osifo on one of his more laborious and incomprehensible but honest feats of penmanship, “Provision of Infrastructure by Authoritarian government is the development, a privilege, and the citizens are expected to be grateful to the dictator. I have Edo State in mind. The celebration of roads, Stadium, “200 thousand awaited jobs” for Edo youths, Agricultural revolution without a farm in almost 3 years, 500 million Naira monthly security vote for the Governor are more important than the observation of the Rule of Law. The midnight inauguration of 9 out of the 24 elected members of Edo State House of Assembly, the dismissal of the elected local government Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Area, the refusal to obey the judgement of the Industrial Court to re-open the School of Agriculture, Iguoriakhi, etc, are irrelevant because Mr. “Technograt” is performing in Edo State.” He scribbled this out on the 28th of August last year when the world thought that he was becoming a better-thinking human being, but he now believes Mr Obaseki is what Edo needs.

First cousin to Isaiah Osifo is the courageous lawmaker, Washington Osifo. Had they not come from the same family, one would have imagined that perhaps the traitorous Osifo, Isaiah, came from a bad family. It is however clear that Isaiah is the exception to the principled norm of the Osifos, in a similar manner to one of his newfound role models whose name may not be deserving of space herein. Washington Osifo was among the lawmakers the tyrannical technocrat governor presiding over the Edo State exchequer robbed of his mandate in one fell nocturnal swoop. Washington did not faint in his spirit. He spoke, he warred, he raged against this travesty to democracy. He fought for his rights. His price? Justice. His gain? A legacy. In sharp contrast, his first cousin, Isaiah Osifo, who had immolated his political career on an altar of greed decided to support the same man he called a “technograt”. Where is the family loyalty? Where is even the party loyalty? What happened to erase all the governor’s misdeeds against which he was so vocal?

In another epistle against the governor on the 31st of July 2019, Isaiah Osifo cleaned out Governor Obaseki with the following words, “Godwin Obaseki is excited with the office and the privileges of the governor of Edo State, but demonstrating infantile dictatorship to undermine the basis of his office and avoiding the responsibility of his office…. In a simple language, Governor Obaseki and his chain of informed, but prefer to be illogical supporters or his ignorant supporters should know that the Constitutional mandate of the Governor is not superior to the mandate of any elected member of Edo State House of Assembly. The government of Edo State is not Governor of Edo State, it is rather the combination of the persons and the functions of the three arms of government -Legislative, Executive and the Judiciary. All the three arms of government derive their authority from the Citizens and the Constitution of Nigeria.”

Yes, I know; it appeared like Osifo was a person of character. Anyone would have thought the same. But having watched him do the same thing to the late Chief Tony Anenih, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor and Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, I knew that all the farcical penmanship was an elaborate investment to blackmail the desperate governor to recruit him for his own ends.

It is for men like Isaiah Osifo, who Former Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden said, “My father used to have an expression. He’d say, ‘Joey, a job is about a lot more than a paycheck. It’s about your dignity. It’s about respect. It’s about your place in your community.’” I do not direct this treatise eponymously to the person that could have been a man, and will in fact not dignify him with a response should he choose to take time off receiving bribes on behalf of himself and his charade of a party. I direct it to the general public, that they may learn the value of dignity and that there is no price for a man.
