Some members of staff of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State, on Monday, staged a peaceful protest to the office of the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Jesse Otegbayo.
With chants of “we no go gree o”, the protesters demanded their 50% share of the COVID-19 hazard allowance as promised to them.
According to the staff members, they also deserved “an equal share as the doctors who get paid 50% of their basic salary.”
Some of the low level staff members (security, attendants e.t.c.), who get paid 10% and 20% in some cases, noted that they’re more exposed than the doctors as they were “the first points of contact with most of the patients when they arrive at the hospital.”
On June 16, the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) also alleged unfair treatment in the implementation of the approved inducement and hazard allowances for medical workers.
They urged the Federal Government to implement the COVID-19 hazard allowances agreement for all medical workers without giving preferential treatment to medical doctors while leaving out other workers.
