The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is hailing the return of Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam as National Chairman, after INEC formally recognised him on its portal in line with a court ruling.
In a statement issued in Abuja Monday, Gabam described the move as a “defining moment” for Nigeria’s democracy.
“That moment has arrived and it has spoken clearly, with the restoration and formal recognition of Alhaji Shehu Musa Gabam as the legitimate National Chairman of our great Party, as duly reflected on the official portal of INEC,” the statement read.
“This decisive development is not merely administrative. It is a reaffirmation of constitutional order, institutional integrity, and democratic maturity.”
The party praised the judiciary for standing firm, calling it “the last hope of our nascent democracy.”
“We commend the judiciary for its courage, independence, and fidelity to the rule of law,” the statement said. “Equally, we extend our appreciation to INEC for its prompt compliance with the subsisting court judgment — an act that reinforces public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions.”
Gabam thanked SDP members nationwide for staying loyal through the leadership tussle. “Your steadfastness has preserved the soul of the Party,” he said.
With the dispute settled, the party is now calling for unity. “All party faithful are enjoined to align with the legally recognized leadership and recommit to the collective mission of building a stronger, united, and forward-looking Party. The time for consolidation is now.”
