The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has dismissed recent reports alleging that 3,907 firearms are missing from its inventory, describing the claims as misleading and inaccurate.
In a statement, Force Public Relations Officer Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi clarified that the allegations stem from a 2019 report by the Office of the Auditor-General of the Federation (AuGF), which referenced unaccounted-for arms, not necessarily missing weapons.
The report predates the tenure of the current Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
The police acknowledged challenges in record-keeping due to operational deployments, civil unrest, and attacks on police facilities. However, they emphasized that many lost arms have been recovered and that routine audits ensure strict accountability.
Additionally, the NPF noted that auditors visiting armories may not always find all weapons on-site, as arms are regularly issued for extended operations.
The force maintains an annual internal auditing process aligned with police regulations and standard procedures, ensuring proper oversight.
The Senate Committee on Public Accounts has postponed its hearing on the matter to February 17, 2025, allowing for further review.
The NPF reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and urged the public to disregard sensationalized reports aimed at undermining trust in law enforcement.
