In a shocking incident, a pilot’s sudden death in the bathroom of a Miami to Chile commercial flight with 271 passengers on-board led to a dramatic emergency landing in Panama on August 13, Sunday night.
Iván Andaur, 56, the seasoned commander of the LATAM Airlines flight bound for Santiago, experienced a severe cardiac arrest at approximately 11 pm, according to reports.
The aircraft quickly landed safely at the airport and medical assistance from Tocumen International Airport rushed to aid Andaur. One nurse and two doctors immediately attended to Andaur, but despite their swift actions, he could not be saved and was pronounced dead on the spot.
A passenger from the flight reported that about 40 minutes into the journey, co-pilot Andaur complained of heart pain and requested immediate assistance from any doctors on board.
Unfortunately, Andaur’s condition worsened, leading the pilot to make the decision to land the plane in Santiago and evacuate all the passengers due to the severity of the situation.All passengers were provided accommodations at Panama City Hotels while flight operations continued.
LATAM Airlines expressed regret over the incident and highlighted their adherence to every emergency protocol.
However, the airline noted that despite their prompt attention to the situation, Ivan Andaur could not be saved.
