The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) says former Anambra governor Peter Obi is now the sole aspirant for its 2027 presidential ticket after the deadline for presidential forms closed.
The NDC closed the sale of Expression of Interest and Nomination Forms for the presidency on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
Party sources said Obi was the only aspirant who purchased the forms.
The party extended the deadline for other positions – governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and state assemblies – to midnight, May 24, 2026.
No further extension will be granted for the presidential ticket.
Screening of aspirants who submitted forms runs from May 19 to May 26, 2026.
Collection and return of nomination forms for cleared aspirants are also scheduled within that window.
Obi recently defected to the NDC from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
With no other presidential aspirants in the race, he is expected to emerge as the party’s consensus candidate, pending screening and clearance.
NDC National Secretary Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu said screening will consider “the wishes of the electorate, local peculiarities, capacity and competence, as well as character.”
The party also said it would apply its affirmative action policy for women, youths, and persons living with disabilities.
Obi still has to be cleared by the screening committee scheduled to sit from May 19-26.
The extended window for other offices will show if the NDC can build structure ahead of 2027.
