Nine suspects have been arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Osun State Command, for allegedly tampering with their energy meters to avoid paying for electricity.
The arrests were made on March 28th at around 8:00 pm in Owode along Ilesa road in Osun State during a joint operation between NSCDC and the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
According to Commandant, Agboola Sunday, the Osun NSCDC boss, the suspects – eight males and one female – were caught in the act.
He stated that the NSCDC has a strong relationship with IBEDC and that the joint task force operation will continue to prevent such criminal activity.
The Commandant emphasised that energy theft and vandalism are major impediments to the development of the country and that the NSCDC will do all it can to bring perpetrators to justice.
Commandant Agboola urged the public to assist in safeguarding critical national assets by reporting any suspicious activity to the nearest NSCDC office.
He also warned non-IBEDC staff to avoid power installations and not to encroach on these facilities under the guise of maintenance. The suspects have made confessional statements and will be prosecuted in a court of competent jurisdiction to serve as a warning to others who tamper with their energy meters.
