The Armed Forces of Nigeria said they were steadfast in their commitment to achieving the enduring defeat of terrorist groups across the nation, coupled with the dismantling of their military capabilities.

“This strategic aim remains paramount, with ongoing efforts focused on achieving this crucial objective,” according to Director ot Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba.

He stated this during a press briefing on ongoing military operations by the Armed Forces of Nigeria on Thursday 14th March 2024
He said recent incidents of citizen abductions in the Northeast (NE), Northwest (NW), and North Central (NC) theatres of operations have been reported.

He said these abductions, perpetrated by ruthless terrorist groups, highlight the grave threat posed by these entities, adding that it was imperative to correctly identify them as terrorists, distinct from mere bandits, given the heinous nature of their activities.

Buba said the current hostage situation, though sensitive, is not without precedent in the ongoing conflict.

Hostages are being held in remote and challenging locations, underscoring the desperation of the terrorists to evade military operations. He said despite these challenges, the Armed Forces remain resolute in their determination to secure the safe return of the hostages.

The Defence spokesman said during the reporting period, significant operational successes were achieved.

He said troops neutralized 213 terrorists and apprehended 216 others, while also thwarting 67 perpetrators of oil theft and rescuing 26 kidnapped hostages.

In the Niger Delta region, troops disrupted illegal activities, resulting in the seizure of illicit materials and infrastructure used for oil theft.

He said efforts to address the hostage situation have been hindered by delays in reporting incidents.

“Nevertheless, the military is leveraging international partnerships to enhance its capabilities, including intelligence sharing, to effectively address security challenges.”

Buba urged the public to exercise caution regarding information disseminated by terrorist groups and their affiliates, particularly on social media platforms.

He said these entities exploit media attention to advance their agenda, and citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and refrain from inadvertently aiding their cause.

He said Armed Forces of Nigeria remained resolute in their commitment to securing the nation and ensuring the safety of its citizens, adding that the ongoing military operations continued to degrade terrorist capabilities and weaken their influence, paving the way for a safer and more secure Nigeria.

Buba reiterated the Armed Forces unwavering dedication to defeating terrorism and restoring peace and stability to the nation.

He urged citizens to remain vigilant, support security efforts, and resist any attempt to glorify or condone acts of terror.
