The Nigerian Army has unequivocally condemned the unprovoked attack on its troops and patrol vehicles during a recent protest along the Lafia-Makurdi Road in Nasarawa State.
The protest was in response to the outcome of the Court of Appeal’s ruling on the gubernatorial election in the state.
Expressing deep concerns and disappointment, the Nigerian Army In a formal statement issued by Director Army Public Relations Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu decries the actions of the protesters, who, in response to the court ruling, blocked the major highway, leading to severe traffic disruptions and launched an assault on troops’ patrol vehicles.
Nwachukwu said contrary to claims made by the protesters alleging that troops’ convoys deliberately collided with them, the Nigerian Army asserted that available video footage and visual evidence attested to the professional conduct of the troops in dispersing the crowd while prioritizing the safety of citizens and safeguarding public infrastructure.
The Nigerian Army reiterated its recognition and respect for citizens’ right to peaceful protest but emphasized the importance of conducting such demonstrations within the bounds of the law.
The use of violence, destruction of public property, and assaults on security personnel was deemed unacceptable and run counter to the principles of peaceful protest.
Nwachukwu said troops were deployed in Nasarawa State with the objective of maintaining law and order, ensuring the safety of all citizens, including protesters, and protecting public infrastructure.
Operating under strict rules of engagement, the troops aimed to prevent further escalation of violence and maintain peace.
The Army asserts that the actions of the protesters, including pelting stones at troops and attacking patrol vehicles, not only jeopardized the lives of personnel but also disrupted the peaceful nature of the protest.
In urging restraint, the Nigerian Army calls upon individuals and groups engaged in protests to opt for peaceful and constructive dialogue as a means of addressing grievances.
The Army also called on community and religious leaders, along with other stakeholders, to contribute to the promotion of peace and harmony in their communities.
The Nigerian Army reassureed the public of its apolitical stance and unwavering commitment to the protection and safety of all citizens.
Collaborating closely with other security agencies, the Army pledged to uphold the safety and security of the people of Nasarawa State and the nation at large.
“Any form of violence will not be tolerated. The Army further implores the media and the public to exercise caution in reporting and disseminating information, emphasizing the importance of accuracy and fairness in order to collectively build a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria,” he said.
