Dickson: “No member will be left behind” as party ratifies primaries, eyes grassroots expansion

The Nigeria Democratic Congress has intensified preparations for the 2027 general elections, approving electronic voting for internal polls while launching a nationwide reconciliation and grassroots mobilization campaign to consolidate party unity after its recently concluded primaries.

The resolutions were reached at the party’s second National Executive Committee meeting attended by presidential candidate Peter Obi, running mate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, NWC members, state chairmen and other stakeholders.

Speaking after the meeting, former Bayelsa Governor and party leader Seriake Dickson said the NEC ratified and endorsed results of primary elections conducted across the federation and commended electoral committees, screening panels, officials, aspirants and supporters for a successful exercise.

Dickson described NDC’s achievements as remarkable for a relatively young organisation, noting it had demonstrated capacity to conduct nationwide political activities and emerge stronger despite challenges.

The party acknowledged disagreements in some locations during primaries but emphasized reconciliation and stakeholder engagement will now be a major priority. “We reaffirmed our commitment to internal democracy, transparency, fairness and inclusion while intensifying reconciliation efforts across the country,” Dickson said. The NEC resolved to immediately commence consultations with aggrieved aspirants, party leaders and supporters, stressing no member would be left behind.

—E-voting framework, digital membership expansion—

One major decision was approval of a framework for electronic voting in future congresses and primary elections. Party leaders argued technology-driven processes would enhance transparency, boost participation and strengthen confidence in internal democracy.

The committee also directed expansion of the party’s digital membership registration platform and strengthening of data management systems as part of broader institutional reforms.

—Grassroots mobilization for 2027—

NEC approved an aggressive grassroots mobilization strategy to expand membership and strengthen party structures at ward, LGA, state, zonal and national levels. Leadership believes a strong grassroots presence will be critical to challenging established political forces.

The meeting reviewed developments in the electoral environment, including aspects of the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines. Party leaders reiterated commitment to pursuing legal and constitutional remedies to protect electoral fairness and a level playing field.

Dickson commended Obi and Kwankwaso for leadership during nomination processes, describing their participation as inspiration for members nationwide. He thanked governorship, National Assembly and State Assembly aspirants, officials and supporters who travelled for the primaries and NEC meeting.

With primaries concluded and presidential ticket settled, NDC appears to be shifting from internal contests to positioning itself as a major contender in the 2027 race.
