NASS Bureaucracy: Sani Magaji Tambuwal’s one year in the saddle as Clerk, BY EMMAH UHINIEH

The ecosystem of the National Assembly has been in a state of frenzy since Sani Magaji Tambuwal stepped in as the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA].

Sani Magaji Tambuwal became acting CNA in November of 2022, and got confirmed as substantive CNA on February 14, 2023.

Ever since he became the CNA, the National Assembly’s administrative architecture has been redefined owing to his superlative leadership style, through well thought out programmes and policies geared towards the betterment of the staff members and well coordinated operations of the lawmakers.

Upon assumption of office as the CNA, Sani Magaji Tambuwal, devoted substantive time and effort in providing a conducive working environment for the lawmakers, by creating an ambience of peace and tranquility for their comfort and discharge of their legislative duties.

Today, lawmakers are happy and going about with so much enthusiasm because of the serene environment within which they operate. No much hassles or challenges, yes, not any more.

Sani Magaji Tambuwal ensures that their logistics and other sundries are provided for and with a top notch security architecture that guarantees safety of life and property within the precincts of the complex.

As a core mandate of the operation of the National Assembly, Sani Magaji Tambuwal has been able to put staff members on their toes in supporting, guiding and facilitating smooth process of law making, by providing technical support and aides to deliver.

He has also demonstrated his unflinching support by encouraging participation of lawmakers and staff members in parliamentary conferences across the world; this is made possible because of the efficient and effective staff members of the Inter Parliamentary department, working round the clock to achieve success.

One of Sani Magaji Tambuwal’s duty was to conduct an induction and inauguration exercise for members of the 10th Assembly. He was able to successfully carry out this remarkable exercise through the deployment of sound and capable hands.

Under Sani Magaji Tambuwal, the national assembly has successfully hosted the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, when he presented the 2024 budget. In the same vein, the budget was passed by both chambers and eventually assented to by the president. After the signing of the budget documents, President Tinubu, in a brief ceremony during the signing, had to say to him: “Clerk, thank you very much” and with a presidential handshake.

Sani Magaji Tambuwal, as a budget officer from the outset, has brought his wealth of experience and knowledge of financial expertise to bear on the finances of the National Assembly, through proper deployment of funds to direct and specific areas, thereby regulating and guarding against waste and misappropriation.

So far, staff mrmbers of the national assembly have not had it so good, in terms of their financial benefits and welfare. Virtually all their financial entitlements are being paid, while others yet to be captured are in the works and almost at the completion stage.

Sani Magaji Tambuwal, in the last one year has been able to raise staff members’ level of commitment and dedication through constant training and retraining at different times and stages, thereby serving as a motivation for them. Staff members’ morale has been upped and they are desirous of giving their best to the institution.

There has been a great working relationship with all staff members in different directorates, creating a peaceful and harmonious understanding between staff members and management and enhancing a synergy that promotes healthy communication and performance.

Sani Magaji Tambuwal has been able to carry along his management team with relative ease. He allows for views and superior arguments. He believes in collective decisions and actions to achieve maximum satisfaction for the good of the institution.

He has remained one of the CNAs with an open door policy; he welcomes brilliant ideas that will move the institution to a better place of pride and glory.

Sani Magaji Tambuwal is doing everything possible for the national assembly clinic to be functional and operational in a matter of time, as so much work is ongoing towards its early completion and commissioning.

Sani Magaji Tambuwal has been able to clear a backlog of outstanding debts incurred by previous administration. This singular act is commendable. In addition, contractors owed before his assumption as the CNA, have been paid. This has also resulted in the withdrawal of a series of litigations against the management of the national assembly by some of the contractors who were owed before now.

Like a loyal staff member to his employers, Sani Magaji Tambuwal has maintained a wonderful relationship with the National Assembly Service Commission. He has shown respect in his dealings by consulting and facilitating smooth operations between the national assembly management and the commission.

Not quite long, there was a promotion examination which enjoyed the full complements of the CNA through the provision of logistics and by making himself practically present to avoid any glitches that may have affected the exercise.

There’s no doubt that the way Sani Magaji Tambuwal is going, the National assembly will soon be a place of excellence. He has remained sharply focused, dogged, tenacious and determined to deliver on his mandate and expectations as the clerk to the National Assembly. He has brought about some firm and solid measures to ensure financial stability and discipline. Not even his worst critics or cynics saw this coming; he was underrated but today, they’re all singing his praise, celebrating his effective and proficient leadership.
