The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has joined forces with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) to tackle the proliferation of fake number plates through a nationwide sensitization campaign.
In a statement, Assistant Corps Marshal, Corps Public Education Officer FRSC Headquarters, Abuja Olusegun Ogungbemide said the partnership was formalized during a crucial meeting between NANS leadership and FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed in Abuja on Friday, February 7, 2025.
The NANS delegation, led by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Student Affairs, Hon. Sunday Ashefon, included NANS President Comrade Lucky Omonefe, Senate President Comrade Akintoye Babatunde, and other executives.
Hon. Ashefon condemned the rise of counterfeit number plates, calling it a threat to national security and a disservice to Nigeria’s transportation system.
He emphasized that President Bola Tinubu’s administration remained committed to curbing such illegal activities.
Comrade Omonefe reaffirmed NANS’ dedication to lawful conduct, pledging to educate students nationwide on the dangers of using unauthorized vehicle registration plates.
He lauded the FRSC’s efforts under Corps Marshal Mohammed’s leadership and expressed readiness for a sustained partnership.
In response, Corps Marshal Mohammed highlighted the urgency of the special patrol operations against fake number plates, commending NANS for its commitment to the cause.
“We appreciate the support of NANS and look forward to working together to ensure road safety in Nigeria,” he said.
The collaboration will focus on public awareness campaigns, mobilizing students to support FRSC’s mission of eliminating fake number plates and enhancing road security nationwide.
