Kano Police arrest 248 suspects in month-long crime crackdown

The Kano State Police Command has arrested 248 suspects for various offenses across the state in the past month.

Commissioner of Police Ibrahim Adamu-Bakori disclosed this on Wednesday during a press briefing on the security situation in Kano.

He said the arrests followed intensified intelligence-led operations, targeted raids, and visibility policing conducted with other security agencies under the Joint Task Force.

According to him, the command arrested 18 armed robbery suspects, five kidnappers, 32 drug dealers, 12 motor vehicle thieves, 11 tricycle thieves, six motorcycle thieves, 15 other thieves, and 149 suspects linked to violent public disturbances.

The commissioner added that three kidnapped victims were rescued and reunited with their families during the operations.

Adamu-Bakori said the command recovered one pistol, one locally made revolver, one locally made revolver pistol, one dane gun, and five cartridges.

Other recoveries he said, included 232 cutlasses, 374 knives, 13 axes, 58 scissors, two bows, 23 arrows, 37 clubs, 923 parcels and 631 wraps of suspected cannabis sativa, four cartons of suspected rubber solution, five packets and 291 pieces of suspected Exol tablets.

“The police also recovered 20 sachets and 513 pieces of suspected diazepam tablets, seven motor vehicles, five tricycles, eight motorcycles, 34 mobile phones, and 36 SIM cards.

“All the suspects are undergoing thorough investigation and will be charged to court upon completion in accordance with due process,” he said.

The commissioner noted that the command had intensified surveillance and deployment in the metropolis, including Panshekara, IBB Road, and Hotoro, following incidents of violent disturbances and social crimes.

“Additional personnel and logistics have been deployed to strengthen border security and rapid response operations.

“The command’s Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), established in line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwanu-Disu, has improved rapid response to armed robbery, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.

The CP said the command had also strengthened community engagement with traditional rulers, religious leaders, youth groups, market associations, and community-based organisations to address the root causes of crime and improve public trust.

He commended the Kano State Government under Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf for supporting security agencies in maintaining peace and public safety.

Adamu-Bakori urged residents to continue sharing timely and credible information, assuring that all tips would be treated confidentially.

The commissioner reaffirmed the command’s commitment to professional, accountable, and community-centred policing to keep Kano safe and secure.
