The Bayelsa Government is partnering the Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) and Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) to train teachers and coaches in the state.
The maiden edition of the training titled: “Building Capacity for Long Term Growth in Primary and Secondary Schools” was held in Yenagoa on Wednesday.
Speaking at the one-day event, the Bayelsa Education Commissioner, Dr Gentle Emelah, urged teachers and coaches to take the training seriously in order to draw productive lessons.
Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mr Simon Okene, Emelah urged the participants to give priority attention to the grooming of students and athletes.
“Students and athletes that fall under your mentorship may not be your children but their success in life will be a fulfillment to you,” he said.
The commissioner said that the Gov. Duoye Diri-led government was deeply committed to youth and sports development.
Mrs Joseph Olabisi, NSSF President, said that youth and sports development were critical to the success of every nation.
Olabisi said that school sports was the bedrock of sustainable sports development anywhere around the world.
“The involvement teachers and grassroots coaches is critical to the development of school sports.
“Nobody gets to the olympic podium without being discovered by a teacher or a grassroots coach,” she said.
The NSSF official thanked the Bayelsa Government for showing enormous interest in youth and school sports development.

“I thank you for this collaboration. You have done well by allowing us to train these teachers and coaches. They will in turn train thousands of our children.
Also speaking, Mr Habu Gumel, NOC President, said that the programme aimed to training teachers and coaches to build resilience, character, and discipline among young people.
Represented by Mrs Kemi Obidan, an NOC board member, Gumel reiterated the importance of equipping teachers and coaches with the skills to effectively mentor students and future sports stars.
