The Kano State Government has alleged that political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections include defection discussions involving Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and President Bola Tinubu, amid claims linking such moves to broader opposition fragmentation and ideological tensions.
The Director General, Media and Publicity at Government House Kano, Sunusi Bature, made the claims during an appearance on the Arise TV Morning Show on Wednesday.
He said Governor Yusuf had at some point approached President Tinubu over a possible defection into the All Progressives Congress (APC), allegedly with the consent of former Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and former Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.
Bature also alleged that ongoing political engagements involving key opposition figures are part of strategic alignments ahead of the 2027 elections, suggesting that such moves are reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
He further claimed that former presidential candidate Peter Obi may face political limitations in Kano due to the state’s conservative political orientation.
The spokesperson also linked emerging political conversations to ideological divisions, stating that individuals associated with pro-Biafra advocacy may struggle to gain acceptance within mainstream politics in Kano.
He argued that such positions reflect the state’s political sensitivities and broader national concerns over separatist movements and regional agitation.
According to him, Kano remains a politically conservative environment where ideological alignment plays a key role in voter acceptance and coalition building ahead of elections.

Bature further alleged that opposition figures are divided by internal disagreements and competing ambitions, claiming this has created openings for the ruling party ahead of 2027.
He also dismissed claims of massive political crowd turnouts at recent gatherings linked to Kwankwaso, describing such figures as exaggerated.
