Acting Chairman of the Bayelsa State Chapter of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP), Barr. George Turnah, has lauded President Bola Tinubu, FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike, the Supreme Court, and the 27 suspended Pro-Wike Rivers State House of Assembly members as exemplary defenders of democracy in 2025.
He also commended PDP National Secretary Senator Samuel Anyanwu and South-South Zonal Vice Chairman Chief Dan Orbih for their steadfast commitment to democratic principles.
In a statement issued by his Media Aide, Pst. Kelvin Loveday-Egbo, to mark Democracy Day, Turnah praised President Tinubu’s resolute leadership in safeguarding democracy, particularly in Rivers State, amid political challenges.
He highlighted the Supreme Court’s pivotal role in upholding judicial independence, noting its bold rulings against undemocratic practices as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democratic framework.
Turnah described FCT Minister Nyesom Wike as a relentless advocate for transparent governance, emphasizing his efforts to combat impunity within Rivers State and the PDP.
He also hailed the 27 suspended Pro-Wike Rivers State House of Assembly members, led by Martins Amaewhule, for their unwavering stand against undemocratic governance, despite personal sacrifices.
Further, Turnah celebrated Senator Anyanwu and Chief Orbih as “Champions of Resistance” for their courageous opposition to undemocratic forces within the PDP. Anyanwu’s legal battle against his unjust removal as PDP National Secretary and Orbih’s fight against attempts to hijack the party’s South-South structure were cited as powerful examples of democratic resilience.
“These leaders—President Tinubu, the Supreme Court, Barr. Wike, the 27 Pro-Wike Assembly members, Senator Anyanwu, and Chief Orbih—are the pillars of Nigeria’s democracy,” Turnah stated.
“Their courage and resolve inspire hope and dedication to justice and equitable governance.”
The statement concluded by urging Nigerians to draw inspiration from these figures, emphasizing that their collective efforts reinforce the need for active participation in sustaining a just and democratic society.
