Ibadan Man Seeks Divorce, Accuses Wife Of Being Fetish, Threatening Him And The Children

Grade A Customary Court, Mapo adjourns case, orders fresh hearing notice after wife fails to appear_

IBADAN— A man has asked a Grade A Customary Court in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, to dissolve his marriage, alleging that his wife is fetish, hostile, and has made his home unlivable.

The plaintiff, Mauroof, told the court on Wednesday that he is no longer interested in the marriage to Latifat, saying “my peace deserted me the very day she moved into my house as my wife.”

—“SHE TURNED MY LIFE UPSIDE DOWN”—

Testifying before the court president, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, Mauroof accused his wife of constant quarrels, insults, and threats.

“My lord, I regretted ever marrying my wife. She turned my life upside down after she came into my life,” he said.

“She has no respect for me as the head of the home. She is unruly and hostile in her behaviour and hurls insults at me. Our home is always in turbulence because she always seeks every opportunity to fight me.”

Mauroof alleged that Latifat’s hostility extended to their children and neighbours.

“She is not hostile to me alone, but also towards our children who find no friend in her. Our first child left home after she threatened to poison him,” he told the court.

He further claimed the defendant regularly threatened to get him arrested.

“She would brag that she would implicate me and send me to prison. Our neighbours are also not exempted from her harsh behaviour. They were at all times ready to fight her back.”

—ALLEGATION OF FETISH PRACTICES—

The most serious allegation was that of fetish practices. Mauroof told the court that Latifat was involved in diabolical activities.

“Latifat is fetish and is always asking for names of my family members for diabolical purpose. My brother caught her gathering sand from the four corners of our house for evil purpose,” he said.

The plaintiff said he had endured enough and asked the court to end the marriage.

“My lord, I am fed up with my wife and no longer interested in going further with our marriage. I pray the court will dissolve our relationship. I further seek an order restraining her from threatening and interfering with my private life.”

—WIFE ABSENT IN COURT—

Latifat was absent from proceedings despite being served with court papers.

The court president, Mrs. Akintayo, adjourned the matter and ordered that a fresh hearing notice be issued and served on the defendant to ensure she is aware of the case.

No date was announced for the next hearing.
