How Police, Army foiled attempted jailbreak at Ikoyi Prison


Policemen and soldiers arrived at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre in time avert an attempted jailbreak at the facility.

A video by a witness had shown smoke billowing from parts of the centre while inmates were seen running in different directions.

The prison authorities, as learnt,  had immediately notified the police and the military authorities for reinforcement.

The witness had told The PUNCH that, “I can see them from my balcony at the moment. Soldiers and policemen have arrived. I saw prisoners throwing stones and I saw fire.

“A lot of the prison officials have gathered at the entrance of the prison while some of the inmates have retreated.”

Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State, Muyiwa Adejobi, said policemen had been deployed in the prisons.

“We don’t know the cause of the fire but we are there on the ground. We have mobilised to the place. We will give details later,” he was quoted to have said on Thursday.

Police aslo on Thursdsy mobilised operatives to Gudu Market, Abuja, following the murder of an unnamed man in the market.

The market known for bustling in the Gudu District of FCT had been reported empty.

A  trader identified simply as Victor said everyone left the market in fear after the corpse of a man was found in the vicinity, adding that the market had been shut down.

“Because of the attack by thugs on Tuesday, everyone was afraid that the violence may spread to the market.

“So, we all locked our shops and ran. I don’t know the circumstances surrounding the man’s death but the market has been shut down,” the trader was quoted to have said in a phone conversation.

The FCT police spokesperson, ASP Mariam Yusuf, had confirmed the incident.

He said that operatives had been deployed in the market to provide security.
