Dr Kayode Fayemi, Executive Governor of Ekiti State and Chairman of the Nigeria Gorvenors' Forum (NGF).

The inability of the Police and Ekiti State government to act decisively against the perpetrators of violence ahead of the June 18, 2022 governorship election, could force the people to defend themselves, said Ajoro Ekiti, a socio-pressure group.

The group has also said it would embark on an election security campaign to sensitize the people on how to use their smartphones as “Election Security Surveillance,” to deter rigging and crimes during the election.

Ajoro Ekiti, on Monday, described as “unacceptable the rising cases of violence, intimidation and harassment without any corresponding arrest or coordinated action against the individuals and unions responsible.”

“The Police Commissioner and Gov. Kayode Fayemi must act urgently to show that there is no place for violence in the state,” said Ajoro Ekiti in a statement signed by the Convener, Ariyo-Dare Atoye.

“Ekiti people deserve their safety; the candidates and party members must be allowed to campaign without threats and attacks, while the peace of the state must not be undermined.

“There is a growing concern among the people that nothing concrete is being done to arrest the perpetrators of violence in the state.

“We fear that the people may be forced to defend themselves if the Police and Mr Governor cannot guarantee their safety and protection.

“The people of the state appear ready to defend their votes on Election Day and would not condone any act of intimidation.

“While we will never urge anyone or group to resort to self-help, we however would like to appeal to the security agencies to act professionally and proactively to defend the people.

“We believe that the security agencies and government have the manpower and resources to guarantee the peace of the electoral process and ensure a free, fair and credible election.”
