The Edo State chapter of the Labour and Civil Society Coalition (LASCO) has been reorganised to effectively mobilise to re-energise civic activities for the wellbeing of the public and also to woo the bulk of voters in the state, to enhance the victory of the candidates of the Labour Party (LP), particularly Mr Peter Obi, its presidential candidate, in the general elections, holding in the country in first quarter of 2023.

The regrouping of LASCO members and filling of its vacant official positions, was held at the LP state secretariat, located in the centre of Benin City, the Edo state capital.

Speaking on the occasion, Comrade Tony Erha, a former Secretary of the state chapter, who convened the meeting on behalf of the national LASCO, regretted that there had been some breaks in the activities of the once-vibrant watchdog activities of LASCO, hence the present moves to reactivate the body, nationwide.

Erha harped on the immediate need for LASCO and its teeming members to firm up its usual grassroots activities and work tirelessly for the election of Mr Obi as president, as he assured all that LASCO was capable of enacting nationwide the same potent winning supports it once gave to Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and Dr Olusegun Mimiko, in winning the governorship elections of Edo and Ondo states, respectively.

At the event, Comrade Fred Akhere, Secretary to Edo State chapter of the party, who spoke on behalf of its chairman, Comrade Kelly Ogbaloi, urged LASCO to ascertain its votes-canvassing ability at the state, local government and ward levels of the state, while calling on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), to come and occupy their positions in the LP’s executive.

Those elected into acting positions of the body, included Comrade Peter Agbonkhese, a notable labour leader, Gabriel Ehiaguina and Mrs Hilda Ogbe as chairman, secretary and treasurer.

LASCO is the oldest coalition in the country, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and the diverse Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) and public Individuals.
