Airlines operating regional and international flights have been directed not to transport passengers showing symptoms of Ebola Virus Disease [EVD].

The directive was issued by aviation and public health authorities as part of efforts to prevent cross-border transmission.

Port Health Services [PHS] said the measure follows the rollout of enhanced screening and monitoring at Nigeria’s entry points. These include active temperature checks, health monitoring protocols, and QR code scanners to speed up passenger health declarations and follow-up.

The update came during a workshop on Ebola preparedness and prevention held by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria [FAAN] in collaboration with health and safety agencies at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

Officials said surveillance has been intensified at international airports, with extra attention on passengers arriving from high-risk countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, and other affected areas.

Stakeholders stressed that rapid detection, reporting, and response require close coordination between government agencies, aviation authorities, health institutions, and security agencies.

Medical experts listed common EVD symptoms as fever, unexplained bleeding, and weight loss. They urged preventive measures such as regular handwashing, good hygiene, avoiding unnecessary physical contact, stronger surveillance, and prompt isolation of suspected cases.
