The Anambra State Government on Friday arraigned eight clerics before an Awka court over alleged violations of the state’s Homeland Security Law.
The defendants, arrested in Onitsha, Awka and other areas, were brought before the court at the state Judiciary Complex. Prosecutors said their activities contravened provisions of the law enacted in February 2025.
Those arraigned are Peter Chukwu, Chinedu Egwuonwu, Bishop Emeka Nwankpa, Ebele Nnachukwu, Ekeleme Chris Ugochukwu, Ndubisi Nnachukwu, Miracle Iruoma and Chukwukadibia Ogwuama.
A media aide to the governor, Ejimofor Opara, said the suspects were described as “fake pastors” and accused of practices the government links to fraudulent wealth-acquisition schemes prohibited under the law.
The Homeland Security Law targets activities considered harmful to public order. The government said the action follows earlier prosecutions of native doctors accused of promoting illicit get-rich-quick schemes, with some convictions already secured.
The Anambra Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice is leading the prosecution. The court adjourned the matter for further hearing.
