The Department of State Services (DSS) on Friday invited Senator Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, founder of Baze University, Abuja, and Labour Party’s 2023 vice presidential candidate, for questioning for alleged inciteful remarks against the Nigerian state.

The invitation followed concerns over Baba-Ahmed’s recent public statements, particularly his claims of a “constitutional crisis” and criticism of the judiciary and military for allowing President Bola Tinubu’s inauguration.

THE CONCLAVE learnt that Datti-Ahmed was “arrested” at the Abuja Central Mosque on Friday afternoon shortly after prayers, but he was said to have been “released” immediately after his interactions with DSS operatives.

Baba-Ahmed allegedly blamed the judiciary and military for allowing Tinubu’s swearing-in, stating that it enabled them to look people in the face and call them “bloody fools”.

The DSS reportedly considered these comments inflammatory and capable of heightening national tension, given Nigeria’s current sensitive political climate.

The DSS viewed the invitation as a preventive measure to clarify intent, contextualize remarks, and prevent narratives that could fuel unrest.

According to a security source, “These sessions are not punitive; they are preventive, focused on clarifying intent, contextualizing the remarks, and preventing the emergence of narratives that could unintentionally fuel unrest.”

The DSS is concerned that Baba-Ahmed’s comments could agitate public sentiment, weaken trust in state institutions, and threaten the corporate existence of Nigeria if allowed to fester.

Similar narratives have contributed to instability in countries like Guinea-Bissau, making the DSS’s caution warranted. [Culled from forefrontng.com]
