Defendant docked for allegedly stealing building materials

A 30-year- old security guard, Abdulhamid Awual, on Friday, appeared before a Life Camp Chief Magistrates’ Court in Abuja, for allegedly stealing building materials worth N777,500

The police charged Awual, who resides at Karasana Estate in the Galadima area of Abuja, on one-count of theft.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The prosecutor, Mrs Charity Nwachukwu, told the court that a complainant, one Mr Musa Jubril, who resides at Kafe Garden in Abuja, reported the matter on June 17, at the Galadima police station.

She, said that the defendant was employed as a security guard in an estate at Karasana, where the complainant is currently building his house.

She alleged that the defendant dishonesty went to the complainant’s site, and made away with 13 pillars of iron rod values N550,000, 15 bags of cement valued N156,800, half bag of nail valued N15,200, as well as transportation and labour valued N55,000.

The total value of stolen items is N777,500.

Nwachukwu said that during police investigation the defendant made a confessional statement that he only made away with iron rods.

She said that the offence contravenes the provisions of section 288 of the Penal Code.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Musa Jobbo, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with one surety in like sum..

He adjourned the case until Aug. 7, for hearing.
