Bayelsa State has received the Festival Torch for the 2nd Niger Delta Games, symbolizing regional solidarity ahead of the multi-sport event set to take place in Benin City, Edo State.

The torch arrived in Yenagoa on Monday, February 16, 2026, as part of its tour across the nine Niger Delta states, sponsored by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) and organized in collaboration with Dunamis Icon Limited.

The ceremony, held at the Samson Siasia Complex, underscored the torch’s role as a beacon of unity, peace, and shared sporting ambition among the participating states.

Governor Douye Diri, represented by Commissioner for Sports Development, Champion Daniel Igali, commended the NDDC and event consultants for pioneering the regional games, which he said have established the Niger Delta as a frontrunner in sports promotion across Nigeria.

“The Unity Torch represents the coming together of our states in the spirit of friendship, fair play, and excellence,” the governor’s representative stated, echoing sentiments from similar receptions in other states.

He reaffirmed Bayelsa’s commitment to strong participation, building on their dominant performance in the inaugural edition.

Speaking on behalf of Chief Itiako Ikpokpo, Chairman/CEO of project consultants Dunamis Icon Limited, Bayelsa State Liaison Committee Secretary Loveday Herbert emphasized the deeper meaning of the torch.

“The lighting of the Festival Torch represents the unity of all the States in the Niger Delta region,” he said. “The goal of every sporting event is to unify participating states, athletes and officials, fostering a spirit of friendship and fair competition.”

Herbert commended the Bayelsa State government for its warm reception of the torch and assured that world-class facilities and seamless organisation are ready for a successful Games in Benin City.

The event was attended by Director of the Bayelsa State Sports Council Andrew Aye, Technical Adviser on Sports Alaowei Opukeme, Director of New Media and State Athletics Association Chairman Dr. Kola Oredipe, coaches, athletes and other sports officials.

The 2nd Niger Delta Games is scheduled to open on Friday, February 20, 2026, in Benin City, Edo State, with the closing ceremony set for Thursday, February 26, 2026.
