Amnesty International has called for the immediate and unconditional release of five Kano-based activists detained after responding to a police invitation.
The activists, including Comrade Abdulmajid Yakubu Daudu, National Chairman of the Nigeria Patriotic Front Movement (NPFM), Barr. Yusha’u Sani Yankuzo, Barr. Amina Bello, Sani NaRogo, Comrade Anas, and Comrade Abdullahi had their mobile phones confiscated during their detention.
In a statement, Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities to ensure the activists’ safety and grant them access to legal representation and family.
The organization condemned the arrests, describing them as part of a troubling trend of repression against individuals exercising their rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.
“Targeting activists for exercising their right to freedom of expression must stop,” the statement read.
Amnesty International called on the Nigerian government to uphold constitutional and international human rights obligations, allowing all citizens to freely exercise their rights.
