2023 Presidency: It is only Goodluck Jonathan that I can step down for- Bala Mohammed, says I can’t step down for Atiku Abubakar

Bala Mohammed.

Governor of Bauchi State Bala Mohammed has said he does not believe in zoning of presidency.

He spoke ahead of the 2023 presidential elections.

He however said that rather than emphasise zoning, the focus should simply be to find a leader who is capable of leading Nigeria.

Governor Bala made the comments during an interview on Channels TV’s “Sunday Politics”.

His intervention came days after himself and former Senate President Bukola Saraki, were selected by the Northern Elders Forum on Friday as the consensus northern aspirants for the Peoples Democratic Party.

According to Bala, himself and Saraki had been asked to decide on who would emerge as the candidate to represent the region.

While stating that he had the wealth of knowledge and experience to lead Nigeria, he said he would only step down for Saraki if he was convinced beyond reasonable doubts that he would do a better job in 2023.

When asked if he would step down for former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, who is considered to be one of the political heavy-weights who is vying for the top job, Bala said: “why can’t Atiku step down for me?”

He explained that the only person that he would step down for is Goodluck Jonathan if he declared his interest to run for President.

“I stand by my commitment not to contest against Jonathan,” the governor said.

Read him: “Why would I step down for Atiku Abubakar? Why can’t he step down for me? I am more qualified than he is. Look at my pedigree. I am more prepared for this than he is.

“If Goodluck Jonathan ever joins the race, then I can’t run against him. He brought me to limelight; he is my boss, my mentor, my friend and my leader. I will have to talk to him before I proceed with this.

“I can never run against a man who made me relevant today in politics; he is a good man; he was a good president….”
