Most of the crises in the country would be resolved with women allowed to lead peace initiatives at the community level, the Country Director of Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, Professor Joy Onyesoh has said.
Speaking in Abuja on the occasion of the commemorating of the 2024 International Day of Peace with the theme: “Empowering Women Peace Actors,” Onyesoh said there was an urgent need to promote a culture of peace in Nigeria, calling for support for women to lead peace initiatives in the communities.
The conference, which was sponsored by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), also had panel discussions amongst women groups from various parts of the country.
Onyesoh, while advocating for the use of the root – cause approach to conflict resolution, insisted that women have what it takes to mediate and reconcile warring factions and should be allowed to be part of mediation.
On his part, the Programme Lead, Integrated Security Fund (ISF), Cliff Gai said they actively advocate and support for recovery of survival of domestic violence.
He said in order to achieve this, we need grassroots network to ensure women engage not only face to face conversation but to also equip them with skills, sustainable effort, financial support, strategic partnership, investing in capacity building.
He said: “We have to keep pushing to strengthen the legal framework that protects women rights.”
