Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, said plans were underway to inaugurate a new security scheme aimed at ridding Abuja of beggars.

Wike, speaking on Monday, at the inauguration of the upgraded War College/Army Checkpoint Road and other ancillary roads in Ushafa, Bwari Area Council, Abuja, emphasised that the FCT Administration would not tolerate begging in the city.

“We cannot allow our city to be overrun by beggars. If you want to beg, go to the villages, but leave the city centre.

“The city must be clean, and we are ready for criminals.

“Some individuals choose to beg, but the FCT administration will not permit it.

“This measure is part of broader efforts to enhance security in the FCT,” Wike stated.

Wike acknowledged the efforts of security agencies in keeping residents safe and warned beggars to leave the city or face the consequences.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that, on October 22, Wike declared war on begging, citing the security risks and negative impact on the city’s image.
