Veritas University, Bwari-Abuja is retooling for the digital age.
The Catholic-owned university has secured National Universities Commission approval to launch five new departments, taking its total to 43 departments across 12 faculties and a College of Medicine.
The new programmes, announced Monday by the University’s Head of Corporate Affairs and Communications, Mr Ben Agande, are http://B.Sc Artificial Intelligence, http://B.Sc Cyber Security, http://B.Sc Information Systems, http://B.Sc Data Science, and B.A Theatre Arts.
The move deliberately targets skills gaps and future job markets, according to management.
According to Agande, the expansion builds on Veritas’ existing computing strength.
The university already runs Law, Medicine and Surgery, Software Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering among others.
Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Professor Hyacinth Ichoku, said the new programmes are designed to fuse “advanced computational thinking, human-centred design and robust data analysis” to prepare graduates for fast-changing digital careers.
“In order to remain relevant in a competitively complex world, students must be exposed early in their academic pursuit to necessary skills set that will set them apart from others,” the VC said. “As Artificial Intelligence and Data science continue to shape a large sector of human life, we cannot afford to lag behind.”
Ichoku added that the university wants students to become “pacesetters in interactive technologies and masters in securing critical digital infrastructure,” with expertise to safeguard institutional and national data.
He said the expansion aligns with Veritas’ goal of leveraging technology to advance teaching, research and community service.
