US to Nigerians: Overstay your visa, ruin it for everyone else

The US Mission in Nigeria warned Monday that Nigerians who overstay their visas were putting future travellers at risk, saying rule-breakers could slam the door on students, business people, and families who play by the book.

In an advisory posted on its official X account, the mission said compliance with US immigration law isn’t just personal — it’s communal. A few violations can reshape how every Nigerian application gets judged.

“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the statement read. “Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.”

The mission noted that Nigerians routinely head to the US for school, deals, tourism, and family visits, and urged every traveller to stick to the terms of their visa from entry to exit.

It also flagged rising cases of visa fraud and document misuse, asking the public to help defend the system’s integrity. Anyone with credible information should report it through the embassy’s consular fraud prevention channels, it said.

Reaffirming its commitment to safe, lawful travel between both countries, the mission stressed one point: when a few people game the system, the compliant majority pays the price.
