University of Benin has been shut down indefinitely.

The management of the university said the decision was with immediate effect.

This was consequent upon protests by some students on Tuesday.

They were protesting the university’s decision to impose extra charges on late payment of school fees.

The management had stated that students, who failed to pay their school fees within the stipulated time, would pay extra charges of N20,000.

However, the Vice Chancellor on Tuesday reviewed the students’ agitation and approved the closure of the university.

He cited security reasons for the closure.

The authorities of the university directed students to vacate the school premises on or before 12 noon on Wednesday, September 15, 2021.

Read part of the statement: “After due consultation, and in the overall interest of the general students’ body, the Vice-Chancellor has, on behalf of Senate, approved the closure of the University with immediate effect.

“This is based on security reports to avoid the students’ action being hijacked by hoodlums; and thereby prevent any form of breakdown of law and order within and outside the campuses of the University.

“Accordingly, all students are to vacate the hostels and the University premises not later than 12 noon on Wednesday 15th,  September 2021.”
