Unable to meet 6000MW target, Minister of Power, Adelabu, moves to resign to contest Oyo guber seat
Adebayo Adelabu

Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is reportedly set to resign from his position to pursue the governorship seat in Oyo State, following President Bola Tinubu’s directive for political appointees with electoral ambitions to step down.

Adelabu’s decision comes amid widespread criticism of his performance, particularly his failure to meet the 6,000-megawatt electricity supply target.

The power sector has been plagued by systemic challenges, including inadequate generation capacity, transmission constraints, and distribution inefficiencies.

Electricity supply currently hovers around 3,331 megawatts, far below Adelabu’s projection.

Gas shortages and unresolved legacy debts of over N6.8 trillion have further strained operations, raising concerns about long-term sustainability.

Adelabu’s exit marks a significant political transition, but it also highlights the persistent challenges facing Nigeria’s electricity sector.

Analysts warn that his successor will inherit a deeply troubled system requiring urgent reforms, increased funding, and stronger regulatory enforcement.
