[PRESS STATEMENT] I, Dr Philip Ugbodaga, the Medical Director of the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Benin wish to express my profound gratitude and commendation to Governor Monday Okpebholo for his donation of N2.5B for the construction of a modern and state-of-the-art paediatric complex at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City.

This gesture demonstrates Governor Okpebholo’s unwavering commitment to improving healthcare delivery in our state and the South-South geopolitical zone, particularly for children in this instant.

The paediatric complex, when completed, will undoubtedly enhance UBTH’s capacity to provide better quality paediatric care, ultimately reducing morbidity and mortality rates among children in the state.

As a healthcare leader, I am impressed by Governor Okpebholo’s vision for a healthier society and his willingness to invest in initiatives that benefit the most vulnerable members of our state, whether in state or federal health institutions. The donation of N2.5B is a testament to his leadership and dedication to the well-being of our people.

His leadership sets a shining example for others to follow especially following similar commendable gesture of financial and infrastructure support by the Executive Governor of Bornu State wherein he recently donated a newly built massive hospital to the federal government to serve as the permanent site for the newly established National Orthopedic Hospital in Bornu State and his donation of one billion Naira for kidney transplant at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH) as well as the building of a 24 apartments meant to reduce housing deficits and accommodate more medical doctors within the hospital, so as to keep them closer to the patients, thereby speeding access to healthcare, especially in cases of medical emergencies.

These actions are consistent with my over two decades advocacy for greater collaboration between the three tiers of government in healthcare delivery by removing the artificial boundaries that make effective healthcare services in our country difficult as there are no federal patients anywhere in Nigeria.

The National Orthopaedic Hospital, Benin, is proud to be part of a healthcare system that values collaboration and partnership. We look forward to working with the Edo State government and other healthcare stakeholders to ensure that we develop a collaborative healthcare model that works and that our collective efforts yield improved health outcomes for the people of Edo State and beyond.

Signed
Dr Philip Ugbodaga
