Tragedy struck at St Peter’s Claver junction, in the industrial city of Nnewichi in Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State at the weekend, as two school children died through electrocution while taking shelter from rain.
According to a witness account and a CCTV footage, the children whose identities have yet to be officially disclosed, were among several pupils who sought shelter in a roadside shop during the heavy rainfall on the day of the incident.
It was learnt that tragedy struck when the wet bodies of the two school children came in contact with a nearly live metal in the place, and they were electrocuted on the spot, even as others narrowly escaped.
It was also gathered that the fatal incident occurred just a few days after a similar tragedy in the same Nnewi area, where a woman was swept away by floodwaters in Uruagu community in the same Nnewi area, after which her dead body was found where it was dumped.
Effort to get the reactions of the State Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, on the incident proved abortive, as she had yet to respond to calls as of the time of filing this report. [With News Express report]
