In a series of decisive operations across the Niger Delta Region (NDR) from December 16 to 22, 2024, troops of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Division, in collaboration with other security agencies, have dismantled 37 illegal refining sites and confiscated over 130,000 litres of stolen petroleum products.
According to Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Army Public Relations Lieut. Col. Danjuma Jonah Danjuma, in Rivers State, troops destroyed nine illegal refining sites in Obiafu, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni (ONELGA) LGA.
The operation uncovered 176 cooking drums, pumping machines, locally constructed dumps, and over 60,000 litres of stolen products, including 50,000 litres of crude oil, 5,000 litres of Automotive Gas Oil (AGO), and 6,250 litres of Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK).
Four suspects were arrested.
Further operations in Buguma, Asari-Toru LGA, resulted in the deactivation of three illegal refining sites and a large boat, with 24,000 litres of stolen products recovered.
In Degema LGA, troops intercepted three boats carrying over 16,000 litres of stolen crude and DPK. At Ozorchi Forest, Abua/Odual, four illegal sites and 10,000 litres of stolen products were neutralized.
Operations along Imo River led to the recovery of 50 drum pots, 65 metal containers, and 5,000 litres of stolen products.
In Bayelsa State, troops dismantled an illegal refining site at Kunsho Creek and thwarted pipeline sabotage attempts in Ekeremor LGA, seizing gas cylinders and pipes.
In Delta State, a tanker truck and a siphoning operation targeting Platform Petroleum Limited were intercepted at Obiukwole Community, with four suspects apprehended.
Troops in Akwa Ibom maintained vigilance over waterways and hinterlands, preventing further criminal activities.
Major General Jamal Abdussalam, General Officer Commanding 6 Division, commended the troops and reaffirmed the Army’s commitment to eradicating oil theft.
“Criminals will not be allowed the freedom to establish footholds in the Niger Delta,” he stated.
