A final-year Computer Science student of the privately-owned Benson Idahosa University (BIU), Benin in Edo State, Bruno Chigozie Ezeonye, slumped and died while playing football on the institution’s football field.
The 21-year-old was said to be the only son of his parents.
He reportedly died at BIU’s Legacy Campus.
His father, according to infopowerng.com, hails from Anambra, and his mother is from South Africa. Both parents are said to be based overseas.
It was learnt he was rushed to the health centre on campus but referred to Faith Mediplex Hospital on Airport Road, Benin, an affiliate of the university where he was confirmed dead.
Angry students reportedly mobilised to protest after vandalising the university’s health centre and security post but were prevailed upon by top officials of the university.
BIU’s Head of Communication and Brand Strategy Unit, Temi Esonamunjor, said: “The university will make an official press statement on the true state of things.”
