A 29-year-old Trader, Nnamdi John-Paul, was on Friday arraigned before an Ogudu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos State, for failing to produce a suspect he stood surety for before the Police.

John-Paul, who resides at Broco Street Oshodi, Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count charge of conspiracy and attempt to pervert justice.

He, however, pleaded not guilty.

The prosecutor, Insp Donjoyr Perezi told the court that the defendant, on Aug. 18, 2023, came to the Ogudu police station and stood surety for Kenneth Uchejigbo.

Perezi said that Uchejigbo was being investigated for a case of conspiracy and stealing of the sum of N440, 000, which he was to use to buy a new Lexus jeep gear box which he failed to do but absconded.

He said that the vehicle belonged to Kelechi Anyanwu, a businessman who buys and sells cars.

Uchejigbo said that the defendant undertook to produce the suspect on Aug. 21, 2023 and subsequent dates demanded by the police but failed.

He alleged that the defendant’s intent was to aid the escape and avert the cause of justice.

The prosecutor said that the offence of the surety contravened the provisions of Section 97 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.

The Magistrate, Mrs M.O Tanimola granted the defendant bail in the sum of N50, 000 with two sureties who must provide proof of tax payments and verification of addresses.

The magistrate adjourned the case until Feb. 16 for mention. (NAN)
