There were indications Sunday afternoon that a national leader of All Progressives Congress, APC, and former governor of Lagos state, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has been hospitalised in Paris, France, after taking ill.

But against the grains of the strong rumour doing the round, his illness has nothing to do with COVID-19.

Tinubu, as claimed, did his COVID-19 test and it returned negative before he jetted out of the country in December for his annual medicals, according to sources close to the development.

Sources in Nigeria hinted at exhaustion which they said he complained of, thus setting the stage for his medical trip outside the country.

He was reportedly flown to Paris at the weekend for more medical attention.

Amid the rumour doing the round, Tinubu’s media adviser, Tunde Rahman, has denied that his boss was down with COVID.

According to him: “This story is inaccurate. Asiwaju is healthy and does not have COVID-19.

“He took his annual trip and as part of the preparation for the trip he took a COVID-19 test which was negative.

“Since the advent of the pandemic, Asiwaju has always done his level best to observe, as strictly as humanly possible, all government advice and safety protocols to prevent the spread of the virus and to keep himself and those around him safe from harm.

“This has not changed. Shortly before Christmas, he indeed travelled out of Nigeria for his annual holiday. This is something he does each year to give himself a chance to rest and reflect on the year just passed while also preparing for the challenges and opportunities of the one to come.

“There will be no further comment on this story from our office.”

Rahman did not want to be drawn into addressing the veracity or otherwise of the report that Tinubu has been hospitalised in Paris.
