Tinubu extols Nigerian women’s excellence, hosts Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala in Lagos

President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu played host to Asisat Oshoala, the renowned Super Falcons striker and recipient of the 2023 CAF Women’s Player of the Year award, during a gracious reception held in Lagos on Thursday.

According to his Special Adviser on Media on Publicity Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the gathering served as a platform for President Tinubu and the First Lady to extend their heartfelt congratulations to the Barcelona Femeni star for securing the prestigious title of the best African female footballer for the sixth time. The distinguished guests acknowledged Oshoala’s exceptional achievements in the realm of women’s football and lauded her noteworthy contributions to the sport on the African continent.

In his remarks, President Tinubu expressed admiration for Oshoala’s accomplishments and underlined the significant role of Nigerian women in various fields globally.

He stated, “Nigerian women will always have a pride of place in the world. What our ladies have achieved in football, our women are achieving in all fields of endeavor around the world—rising to the top and demonstrating the best of the Nigerian character of excellence, tenacity, ingenuity, and resilience.”

President Tinubu and the First Lady, cognizant of the notable achievements of other Nigerian women such as star sprinter Tobi Amusan and the inclusion of multiple Nigerian women, including media mogul Ms. Mo Abudu and Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, on Forbes’ ‘2023 World’s 100 Most Powerful Women’ list, reassured Oshoala of the nation’s unwavering support for her and other Nigerian women striving for excellence in their chosen paths.

Following the warm reception, Oshoala expressed her gratitude to the President and the First Lady, stating, “I want to appreciate the President and the First Lady for giving me the opportunity to present the award to them. During the last World Cup, we had a couple of issues, and they intervened and have been very supportive to the girls, even after the competition.”

Ngelale provided these insights on the event, emphasizing the government’s commitment to supporting and celebrating the achievements of Nigerian women in various fields.
