Former Head of State Yakubu Gowon will present his long-awaited autobiography at a public event in Abuja on May 19, 2026.
President Bola Tinubu is listed as special guest of honour, while former Defence Minister Theophilus Danjuma will unveil the book.
The ceremony will hold at the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre and is expected to draw political leaders, military veterans, diplomats, and other guests.
Published by Havilah Group, the 881-page memoir covers Gowon’s childhood, military career and nine years as Head of State from Aug. 1, 1966.
It also revisits key moments in Nigeria’s history, including the 1967–1970 civil war.
Born in 1934, Gowon left office in 1975 and later earned a doctorate in political science from the University of Warwick in 1984.

He has since focused on peacebuilding and public health campaigns, including the “Nigeria Prays” movement and programmes targeting HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, guinea worm and viral hepatitis through the Yakubu Gowon Centre.
He currently serves as Nigeria’s national goodwill ambassador for the control of viral hepatitis.
