In the pursuit of a life that is pleasing to God and grounded in spiritual principles, one must confront one of the most terrible and very formidable adversary—the flesh. The Bible, in 1 John 2:15, warns us not to love the world and its fleeting pleasures, as such affections can hinder our connection with God. Matthew 6:24 further emphasizes the impossibility of serving two masters, urging us to choose between God and the temporal allurements of the world. This underscores the importance of conquering the flesh as a prerequisite for living a spirit-controlled life and getting to heaven.
The term “flesh” in a biblical context does not merely refer to our physical bodies but encompasses the sinful nature inherent in humanity.
Who is the Flesh?
• The flesh is the force that works in your physical body to desire and act against God’s words and ways
• The flesh is your most friendly enemy.
• The flesh is your closest companion working against you.
• The flesh is the friend inside you who is working for the adversary outside
The apostle Paul describes the ongoing battle between the spirit and the flesh in Galatians 5:17, highlighting the internal struggle to resist worldly desires and live according to God’s will.
Conquering the Flesh
Renewal of the Mind: To conquer the flesh, one must first transform the mind. Romans 12:2 encourages believers to renew their minds, allowing the Word of God to reshape their thoughts and perspectives. This process involves breaking free from the conformity of worldly values and aligning one’s mind with God’s truth.
Spiritual Disciplines: Engaging in spiritual disciplines such as prayer, fasting, and meditation on Scripture fosters a deeper connection with God. These practices strengthen the spirit, enabling believers to resist the temptations of the flesh. Through consistent communion with God, individuals gain the strength to overcome worldly desires.
Choosing God over the World: The teachings of Matthew 6:24 highlight the necessity of making a conscious choice between serving God and succumbing to worldly pursuits. Prioritizing an intimate relationship with God above materialism and worldly acclaim is essential for conquering the flesh.
Living a Spirit-Controlled Life: As believers conquer the flesh, they open the door to living a life controlled by the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:22-23 outlines the fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. These virtues characterize a life surrendered to God and demonstrate the transformation that occurs when the flesh is subdued.
Conquering the flesh is a foundational step in the journey toward a life that pleases God and leads to heavenly blessings. By adhering to biblical principles, renewing the mind, and choosing God over the world, believers can navigate the challenges posed by the flesh. As Matthew 16:25 reminds us, “For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it.” Surrendering the flesh is not a loss but a gain—a gain of a life pleasing to God and filled with the abundance of His blessings.
